Book Clubs

If you’re an avid reader and enjoy discussing books with others, then maybe a book club is a way for you to socialize and indulge your habit.  For many years, book clubs have been popular with people for a variety of reasons.  Socially, it’s a great way to get like-minded people together for an in-depth discussion that allows everyone to contribute their opinions and observations in a relaxed, informal setting.  Book clubs can also encourage people to read more or to read books with topics that they might not normally choose for themselves.  For others, the books themselves can challenge the mind, educate them or simply entertain.

Joining a book club can be quite easy.  Lots of workplaces now have clubs that meet during lunch hours or you may have heard of a club in your neighbourhood, at your local community centre or library; even your local book store notice board can be a source.  And don’t forget friends or relatives.

Forming your own book club is another option and it doesn’t have to be labour-intensive.  Start simple and ask yourself a few questions before you get started.

  • Do you want to have people with similar backgrounds, gender, experiences, ages, etc., or would a mix work best in your book club? This is a social occasion as well so make sure that you choose carefully.  All women, all over 30, couples, etc.
  • What about numbers?  6-8 is usually best.
  • Where would you meet? A rotation of homes works well – other locations may be too noisy and lack privacy.
  • How often?  Monthly is quite popular; gives people time to read the chosen book.
  • Evenings are good for most people, but what day would work best?
  • How will you pick your books for the year? All at once or one at a time.

Once you have your members selected, all of these details can be worked out or modified to suit the group dynamic.

With only one Ravenscraig new homes for sale in Halifax, it’s a perfect place to start a book club.  Keeping the book club in the Ravenscraig community is a great alternative to using a car and it makes it easier for people to share books.  Since you have a whole neighbourhood of potential readers to canvass, post a notice on the Ravenscraig website to gauge interest and go from there.  It’s rare that a subdivision of Halifax new homes for sale has developed such a friendly atmosphere that a book club is a natural extension of the community.

Now comes the easy part – choosing the books. There are a number of online resources to help you make your selections:  Check out the Halifax Public Library site at www.halifaxpubliclibraries.ca for more information and links to various resources like www.litlovers.com , www.readinggroupchoices.com , and a number of links to popular publishers with book club sites. Of course there is always Oprah’s Book Club and your own reading list and recommendations to put forth. Canada Reads is a wonderful source of Canadian literature so make sure you check it out as well.
