Maintaining your gas grill during the summer

Large outdoor decks found in Ravenscraig’s new homes for sale in Halifax are perfect for entertaining outdoors and grilling. Whether you grill frequently or every so often, maintaining your gas grill is important for preserving your grill over time. Follow these basic maintenance tips to have a delicious, happy and safe grilling season.

Protect your home and gas grill - In order to protect your grill from the various weather conditions we suggest purchasing a waterproof grill cover. Only cover the grill when it’s not in use and when it’s cool. Your grill should be positioned at least 10 feet away from your home. Never grill in an enclosed area or in windy conditions.

Clean and wash your gas grill - Before lighting up your gas grill ensure the tank is full. Check the hose connection to make sure there are no leaks. If the hose doesn’t fit tightly, gas can leak and in turn cause an accident. Clean your grill’s burner and tubes. Only clean this when your propane tank is turned off. To clean your burner and tubes make sure your propane tank is first turned off. Next, detach the briquettes and cooking grates, and then carefully remove the gas burner and tubes. Clean the tubes with mild dishwashing soap and warm water and then towel dry. Use a damp cloth to wipe the burner clean. To wash your grill simply use aluminum foil to cover the gas valves for starters. This will keep your connections safe from corrosion. Afterwards, wash the interior and exterior surfaces of your gas grill. Get rid of excess grease by flipping over the briquettes, closing the lid and heating the grill on high for about 15 minutes. Remove the briquettes and cooking grates once your grill has cooled off. Use a grill brush to scrub the grates along with warm, soapy water. Next, towel dry and put back the briquettes.

Specific instructions - Your owner's manual provides instructions. Since every grill is different consult the manual for specific cleaning and grilling guidelines.

End of grilling season - Once grilling season is over follow instructions found in the “clean and wash your gas grill” section to give your gas grill a thorough cleaning before storing it for winter. Next, place the cover on your gas grill. If you plan on storing it in your garage, disconnect your propane tank and leave it outdoors in an upright position, out of direct sunlight and away from vents.
