How to Pick a Paint Colour

Fri, 12 Oct 2012 by Polycorp

How difficult can it be to choose a paint colour, right?  In reality, picking a paint colour can be a challenge and it’s important to get it right; paint colour has a huge impact on the look and feel of your space.  A colour chosen from a paint chip can look very different on the wall.  With so many colours to choose from you may be wondering, “where should I start”?  Don’t worry, picking a paint colour doesn’t have to be a stressful experience when you know how to approach it.  Polycorp suggests these key steps for picking a paint colour for your Halifax new homes.

  1. First, define the mood or theme of the room.  Ask yourself, “what am I trying to accomplish in this space?” and “how do I plan on using it”?  Are you going for peace and serenity or are you trying to energize the room?  Are all four walls going to be the same colour or will there be an accent wall?
  2. Second, try selecting a memory or item to draw inspiration from before setting out on your paint colour selection journey.  Inspiration can be drawn from a picture in a magazine, an article of clothing, a portrait, a recent vacation, a favourite cartoon character (if it’s a child’s room) or an heirloom dining room table.
  3. Next, map out how you’d like the room to be set up.  This will give you a better idea of what colours you’ll have to choose from with the furniture and accessories you’ll use to decorate the room.
  4. Once this is done, head out to your local hardware store to collect paint chips. We recommend selecting ten to fifteen paint chips that are different hues of the colour you want.  After all, the way the paint chips look in the store may be totally different from how they’ll look in your home.  Hang the paint chips on your Halifax new homes walls and leave them there for a few days.  This way you’ll be able to see how they look at different times of the day.  Discard the ones you don’t like until you’re left with a few choices.
  5. Then, go to the paint store and purchase small tins of paint (a quart is the smallest you can buy) in each of the colours you have chosen .  Paint small sections on the wall (at least a few feet square) with the each of the colours you’ve selected to get an idea of how they’ll look.  Live with the colours for a couple of days and by then you should know which one works best for the space.
  6. You’ll also want to select a primer, trim colour and the paint finish .  A semi-gloss finish is easier to clean and provides a tougher finish (good for bathrooms, kitchens, mudrooms, doors, windows and trim) whereas a matte finish is fine for most walls and ceilings in living spaces such as living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms.

If you follow these steps you’ll be sure to select the perfect colour for your Halifax new homes
