Movember
Mon, 12 Nov 2012 by Polycorp
At the first of November, men shaved off their facial hair and registered at Movember.com for the annual month-long event, Movember. Movember is an event held every November to raise awareness and funds for a serious cause, men’s health. It began in 1999 when a group of men in Melbourne, Australia decided to grow their mustaches in aid of research into men’s health issues. The idea caught on and thirteen years later Movember is celebrated in Canada and across the globe.
Mo Bros, the men who participate in Movember, raise awareness for 30 days with their mustaches (no goatees or beards are allowed). The Mo’s are a great way to spark conversation amongst friends, colleagues, new home in Halifax neighbors and strangers alike on a topic that definitely needs more promotion.
And though this may sound like an all-male event, to the contrary ladies can participate in Movember too. Mo Sista’s are the wives, girlfriends, sisters, nieces and granddaughters who support Mo Bros during the entire month.
Last year alone, over 854,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sista’s around the world participated in the Movember global movement and raised $125.7 million CAD. Funds raised in Canada support male mental health and prostate cancer and are directed to programs run by Movember and their men’s health partner, Prostate Cancer Canada.
In addition to raising funds and shedding light on an issue that may otherwise go ignored, Movember is a creative way to see what you and new home in Halifax Mo Bros can come up with in just a month. You can throw a contest amongst yourselves and have your Mo Sista’s vote on who has the best mustache.
Even if you didn’t register for the event, you can still show support for a great cause and get people talking. Get your new home in Halifax family and neighbors involved by taking up a collection and making a general donation or donating to an individual or team here.
