Dealing with Sentimental Clutter

Mon, 18 Feb 2013 by Polycorp

Are you a sentimental hoarder?  You know, the type that holds onto personal effects even though they should have been thrown out years ago? Though we’ve all accumulated or received possessions that hold a special place in our hearts, there are times they should be thrown away.  By not letting go, we end up amassing sentimental clutter.  And whether you’re a first-time homebuyer, downsizing or just looking for a new place, you can’t afford to bring all of that into your new condo in Halifax NS.  Sentimental clutter is the adult version of our teddy bear or blanket.  Deal with it by following these tips.

Assess your goods - Maybe they’re gifts from friends, greeting cards, a favourite pair of jeans that no longer fit, university acceptance letters, children’s arts and crafts, family heirlooms or something passed on from a loved one.  Once you’ve organized everything you’ll have a better idea of what to do next.

Keep only the best - Evaluate what you have and why you still have it.  Unless it’s a family Bible, wedding China or another family heirloom, the truth of the matter is, if you haven’t used it in years, you probably won’t.  Throw out what you no longer use if you don’t think anyone else will use it either.  Is it really necessary to keep every Valentine’s Day card you’ve received or magazine you’ve collected?  Go through things and keep the best of the best.  You may even be able to incorporate items into your Halifax NS new condo décor, like displaying porcelain trinkets on your shelves, framing a greeting card or hanging an art project.

Donate - If it won’t fit into your new condo or is something you no longer need, perhaps someone else could benefit from it.  One option is to give items to family or friends, or you could donate them to the goodwill.  But remember, not everything you decide to get rid of should be given away.  Evaluate what’s really trash or will it be someone else’s treasure?  Perhaps it would be worth making a call to an auction house or antique dealer to find out.

Saying goodbye to your precious possessions won’t be easy, but it’s going to be okay.  Take a picture of an item as a way to hold onto the memory without holding onto the object.  Now that photos are digital, they won’t add to the clutter!  Let go of what you don’t need and move into your new condo in Halifax NS with a fresh start.  You might be surprised at how great you feel.
