Planting an Herb Garden at your New Home in Halifax

Wed, 15 May 2013 by Polycorp

Add flavor to your dishes this spring and seasons to come by planting an herb garden at your new home in Halifax NS.

  1. Now that you’ve decided to grow an herb garden it’s time to pick a location. This location should be sunny and have good drainage. We suggest planting near the kitchen to easily access your herbs while you’re preparing meals. Your deck is an ideal place to house herbs you’ve potted in containers.
  2. Your herb garden isn’t a one size fits all. You can plant some in your yard, in used egg cartons or containers. If you’re planted your herbs in a garden plot, make sure you’ve readied the soil before you plant. Container gardens and egg cartons fair well with composted potting mix and sand. Make sure there are holes in both of these for proper drainage.
  3. Decide on what you’re going to plant. For newbies, we suggest rosemary, basil, parsley and chives because they’re perfect for beginners. Seasoned planters or those up for the challenge should try oregano, dill, cilantro and thyme.
  4. Start planting before it gets too hot outside because the sun will cause your plants to wilt away. Early in the morning or in the evening are ideal times.
  5. Plant lavender, mint, oregano and rosemary separately from your other herbs. They’ll take over your Halifax NS new home garden if you don’t plant them by themselves.
  6. Don’t overwater your herbs because that will kill or make them less flavorful.
  7. Too much fertilizer isn’t good for your herbs either. Keep in mind that compost is a great substitute to use instead of fertilizer because it’s rich in nutrition.
  8. Prune your herbs to promote growth and keep them healthy before they’re ready to eat.
  9. Identify your herbs easily by using labels. This way you won’t mistake one herb for another and mess up your dish.
  10. Sit back and watch it grow. Enjoy the fresh basil on your next homemade pizza, mint in your mojitos and cilantro for your chicken.

We hope these tips will help you be well on your way to starting your herb garden. It’s a great alternative to having to purchase herbs at your local market. Stay connected to Polycorp for what’s to come from your new home in Halifax NS.
