Remembrance Day

Fri, 08 Nov 2013 by Polycorp

November 11th, Remembrance Day, is also known as Armistice Day or Poppy Day. Officially, hostilities of World War I formally ended, “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month”, in 1918.  The day was created to remember all the members of the armed forces who died in the line of duty.

In the week or so prior to November 11th you will see poppies being sold at various locations throughout the city by the Royal Canadian Legion to raise money for veterans.  As a child, you may remember being taught In Flanders Fields, the poem written by Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae in 1915.  The poem became very popular during World War I and is one of Canada’s best known literary works.  Red poppies became a familiar emblem of remembrance and the red colour became an appropriate symbol for the blood spilled in the war primarily due to popularity of In Flanders Fields.

On November 11th special services are organized throughout Nova Scotia at local war memorials or cenotaphs.  The services often include the playing of “The Last Post”, a reading of the “Ode of Remembrance” and a two minute silence at 11:00am.  Wreaths are laid at the base of memorials by various groups and individuals at the end of the service.  You can view the service from Ottawa on CBC or go online to view the wealth of information available at www.veterans.gc.ca about this special day.

In Nova Scotia, to commemorate the effort and sacrifice of veterans who served Canada home and abroad, Highway 102 between Miller Lake and Truro was designated Veterans Memorial Highway.

Take some time on Monday to honour those who have lost their lives while serving their country; attend a Remembrance Day ceremony, view a documentary or movie, talk to a veteran, pause for a two minute silence at 11:00am or wear a poppy.  There are a number of different ways to show your appreciation and gratitude for their service.

Lest We Forget.
