Halifax Oval

Mon, 02 Dec 2013 by Polycorp

The weather may be getting colder but you can stay nice and warm with a brisk skate around the Emera Oval.  According to the HRM website, www.halifax.ca, the oval should be up and ready to go for this year on Dec 15/13.

The Canada Winter Games of 2011 left a lasting legacy for Nova Scotia and some stellar facilities like the oval.  For those who are new to the city, the oval sits at the corner of Cogswell and North Park St on the Halifax North Common, and is a short walk from Q Lofts.  Apparently it is the largest outdoor artificially refrigerated ice surface east of Quebec City and it is a permanent feature of the city that is used both in the summer for inline skating and in the winter for ice skating.  The ice surface is huge – equivalent to the ice surface of three NHL hockey rinks so it can accommodate about 1500 people at one time!  It will be open 7 days a week with ample opportunity for public skating.

No skates?  No problem. With a valid Government ID you can borrow skates and helmets at the site courtesy of Active Halifax Communities/RBC Skate Drive.  There are free public recreation programs, a Learn to Skate program, speed skating programs, Skating for Schools and a number of special events throughout the winter season. Essentially there is a little something for everyone.  And of course there are some rules and regulations that must be obeyed in order to keep everyone safe.

Accessibility has been addressed with parking on Cogswell, one accessible washroom, a ramp to the skate/helmet trailer, free sledge rentals (outside lane only) and the fact that wheelchairs are allowed on the ice/concrete (outside lane only).

The weather tends to keep folks indoors during the winter and you know curling up with a good book is not a bad idea.  But if you want to get out of your new condo in Halifax, get some fresh air and a little exercise or even learn how to skate, the oval is just the thing. During the 2012/2013 skating season, approximately 130,000 skaters enjoyed this incredible facility.  Why not count yourself in for the 2013/2014 season?
