Halifax Cold Weather Fitness Tips

Inclement weather can put a damper into even the most avid fitness enthusiast’s workout regimen. But cold weather shouldn’t prevent you from working out this winter. Follow these tips to get your fitness on, in and around your Ravenscraig community.

  1. Dress in Layers – Dressing in layers is essential for working out. Select polyester or synthetic fibers for your first layer. Unlike cotton that’ll absorb water and remain wet, these types of materials help wick moisture away from your skin. The second layer should be of insulated material, like a fleece. Choose a waterproof outer layer to round out your layers. Layering will provide you the flexibility to remove or add clothing as your body temperature changes.
  2. Protective Gear – Wear light colours and or reflective gear when exercising at night. Wearing a helmet when biking is mandatory in HRM and highly recommended when skiing, snowboarding or sledding. Sneakers with sturdy traction should be the footwear of choice to prevent falling or slipping on an icy road, path or trail
  3. Hands and Head – Guard your hands from frostbite by wearing gloves. A hat will also help to retain body heat, which would otherwise be lost with an uncovered head.
  4. Weather Forecast – Check the weather conditions before heading out. Battling dangerous elements (cold, ice, rain, snow or wind) should never be part of your workout plan. If the temperature and forecast is too risky, opt for an indoor workout in your flex room turned home gym instead.
  5. Tell a Friend – Someone should always know your workout route and when to expect you home just in case something goes wrong.
  6. Stay Hydrated – Fluids should be consumed before, during and after you exercise to replenish liquids and keep you hydrated.
  7. Skin Care – Safeguard yourself from the sun by applying sunscreen to your face and balm to your lips.
  8. Warm Up/Cool Down – A good workout should start with a warm up and end with a cool down. This will properly prepare your body for a workout and help it recover from it.
